The Mai Tai is a classic, tropical-inspired cocktail with a rich and complex flavor that makes it unforgettable. It combines two types of rum—dark (or gold) and white—as the base, perfectly complemented by sweet almond syrup and fresh citrus juice. The harmony between the rum’s bold character and the sweet, aromatic notes is what makes this drink truly stand out.

Story

The origins of the Mai Tai trace back to Oakland, California, where Victor J. Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron created the Mai Tai in 1944, according to most accounts. Legend has it that he served the drink to guests from Tahiti, who were so impressed they exclaimed, “Mai Tai-Roa Aé,” meaning “The best of this world” in Tahitian. Naturally, other bars and mixologists also claimed credit for inventing the Mai Tai, sparking a wave of competition—and many new cocktails for the public to enjoy.

Ingredients

1 ⅓ oz (40 ml) dark rum

⅔ oz (20 ml) white rum

½ oz (15 ml) orange Curaçao

½ oz (15 ml) almond syrup (Orgeat)

1 oz (30 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice

How to Make a Mai Tai Cocktail

Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake gently and briefly, then strain into your glass. Some variations suggest shaking all the ingredients except the dark rum, then pouring it over the top after straining to create a layered effect.

Serving and Garnish

The Mai Tai is traditionally served in an old fashioned glass. Garnish with a lime wedge, and add a sprig of fresh mint for a touch of visual flair.

Calorie Content

A single serving of a Mai Tai contains approximately 280 calories, depending mostly on the rum and the amount of sugar syrup used.
