Tequila Sunrise cocktail

The Tequila Sunrise is a true symbol of exotic flair and the beauty of a rising sun. Its striking layers of color capture the first rays of dawn, while the flavors combine the bold base of tequila with the refreshing sweetness of orange juice. A splash of grenadine syrup adds a distinctive sweet-and-tart twist that makes this drink unforgettable. It’s the perfect choice for anyone who loves vibrant yet easy-to-make cocktails and wants to bring a touch of the tropics to their glass.

Story

The Tequila Sunrise first appeared in the 1930s, but the modern version was created in the 1970s in Sausalito, California, when Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice, bartenders at the Trident bar, reinvented the recipe. Their take was simpler to prepare and far more visually appealing, which helped it spread quickly. The cocktail rose to fame in 1972 when Mick Jagger tried it at the Rolling Stones’ tour kickoff party. The band kept ordering it everywhere they went, and a year later the Eagles cemented its status with their song “Tequila Sunrise” on the Desperado album.

Ingredients

1 ½ oz (45 ml) tequila

3 oz (90 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice

½ oz (15 ml) grenadine syrup

How to Make a Tequila Sunrise Cocktail

Making a Tequila Sunrise is simple, but the layered look is key. Fill a highball glass with ice, pour in the tequila and orange juice, then slowly drizzle the grenadine over the back of a spoon so it sinks and creates a sunrise-like gradient. Do not stir, or the colors will blend. No shaker is required for this cocktail.

Serving and Garnish

The Tequila Sunrise is traditionally served in a tall highball glass that showcases its vivid layers. Garnish with an orange slice and a cocktail cherry on the rim to complete the tropical presentation.

Calorie Content

One serving of Tequila Sunrise cocktail contains about 180–200 calories, mostly from the sugar in the grenadine syrup.
