The Enzoni cocktail is an elegant modern classic that skillfully balances the citrusy freshness of gin, the bitterness of Campari, and the fruity sweetness of grapes. It feels both vibrant and refined, reminiscent of a Negroni crossed with a Gin Sour, yet with a much more playful and lighthearted character. Moreover, the fresh grapes add a distinctive texture and aroma, turning the Enzoni into more than just a drink—it becomes a true tasting experience.
Story
The Enzoni cocktail was created by Vincenzo Errico, the legendary Milan-born bartender, at Milk & Honey in New York in the early 2000s. His aim was to create a modern twist on the Negroni, softening the assertive character of gin and Campari with grapes and citrus. The cocktail’s name also comes from Vincenzo’s nickname, which gives the Enzoni a personal touch while helping it become a globally recognized drink.
Ingredients
1 oz (30 ml) gin
1 oz (30 ml) Campari
¾ oz (22.5 ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ oz (15 ml) simple syrup
5–6 green grapes, seedless
How to Make an Enzoni Cocktail
First, use a muddler to thoroughly crush the grapes in the bottom of a shaker to release their juice. Then add the gin, Campari, lemon juice, and simple syrup, and shake vigorously with plenty of ice. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with fresh ice. For a clearer, less cloudy result, use a fine strainer as well.
Serving and Garnish
The Enzoni cocktail is typically served in an old-fashioned glass with fresh ice. For garnish, thread three green grapes onto a skewer and place it on the rim or across the top of the glass. This both refers back to the drink’s key ingredient and gives the cocktail a clean, elegant presentation.
Calorie Content
A single serving of an Enzoni cocktail contains approximately 180–190 calories. The grapes and simple syrup provide most of the natural sugar, while the gin and Campari contribute the alcoholic calories.
