Espresso Martini cocktail

Espresso Martini cocktail

The Espresso Martini is a modern classic in cocktail history. It’s the perfect choice for evenings when you want a caffeine boost and an elegant drink. Fresh espresso adds bold flavor. Vodka brings a clean, smooth base. Coffee liqueur adds just the right touch of sweetness. A silky layer of foam finishes it beautifully. Thanks to its delicate bitterness and perfectly balanced sweetness. It’s truly irresistible—and its refined look and rich flavor can make any occasion feel special.

History

The Espresso Martini cocktail was created by Dick Bradsell, a legendary London bartender, in the late 1980s at Fred’s Club. According to the story, a young model (some say Naomi Campbell) walked into a Soho bar and asked for a drink that would wake her up and shake her up at the same time. That request inspired the cocktail, which was first served under the name Vodka Espresso. Later, it became known as the “Martini” because it was presented in a martini glass, even though it technically isn’t a true Martini. The Espresso Martini quickly took the world by storm and has since become one of the cornerstones of modern cocktail culture.

Ingredients

1 ⅔ oz (50 ml) vodka

¾ oz (25 ml) coffee liqueur (preferably Kahlúa)

1 oz (30 ml) freshly brewed espresso

⅓ oz (10 ml) sugar syrup (optional, to taste)

How to Make an Espresso Martini Cocktail

Start by brewing the espresso and let it cool slightly so it won’t melt the ice too quickly. Then pour the vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, and sugar syrup (if desired) into a shaker. Add plenty of ice, and shake vigorously for about 15–20 seconds until the drink is well chilled and a smooth, silky foam forms. Finally, strain into a chilled martini glass, ensuring that the creamy foam layer sits beautifully on top.

Serving and Garnish

One of the signature features of an Espresso Martini is the rich foam floating on the surface, traditionally garnished with three coffee beans. These beans also carry symbolic meaning, representing luck, happiness, and health.

Calorie Content

A single serving of an Espresso Martini contains approximately 200–220 calories, coming mostly from the sugar in the coffee liqueur and the optional syrup. The vodka itself contributes very little sweetness, but it completes the cocktail’s smooth and satisfying finish.
