Fluffy Duck cocktail

Fluffy Duck cocktail

As its name suggests, the Fluffy Duck cocktail is not a serious, austere classic. Instead, it is a frothy, creamy, playful concoction that feels sweet, smooth, and slightly nostalgic all at once. This cocktail brings together egg liqueur—or advocaat—orange liqueur, and gin in a unique yet surprisingly harmonious way, almost like a grown-up dessert drink. It is quirky, charming, and, if you prefer a sweeter base, it can also be made with rum instead of gin.

Story

The Fluffy Duck belongs to the cocktail culture of the 1970s and 1980s, when sweet, creamy drinks—especially those made with egg liqueur—were hugely popular. Its exact origins are uncertain, though the drink is most often linked to Australia, where it is believed to have first appeared at Cauldron Bubbles, a restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst. It is not a mixological masterpiece, but rather a cheerful party cocktail made for anyone who enjoys sweet, creamy flavors. It can be served as a long drink with orange juice, although the short drink version is more common.

Ingredients

1 oz (30 ml) gin

1 oz (30 ml) egg liqueur or advocaat

⅔ oz (20 ml) orange liqueur, such as triple sec or Cointreau

⅔ oz (20 ml) orange juice, or cream for a richer, more dessert-like version. However, do not use both together, as the acidic orange juice can react with the cream and cause curdling.

1 oz (30 ml) soda water or citrus soda, optional, for the longer version

How to Make a Fluffy Duck Cocktail

Add all the ingredients, except the soda water, to a shaker filled with ice. Shake well until the drink becomes frothy and silky in texture. Then, gently strain it into a glass filled with ice. If you prefer a lighter version, top it with a splash of soda water or citrus soda to make the drink even airier. However, this step is entirely optional.

Serving and Garnish

The Fluffy Duck cocktail is usually served over ice in an old fashioned glass or a Collins glass. For garnish, an orange peel twist or a small cocktail cherry adds a playful retro touch. For the creamier version, however, a light dusting of grated nutmeg on top works especially well.

Calorie Content

One serving of a Fluffy Duck cocktail contains approximately 200–220 calories, mainly due to the egg liqueur and orange liqueur. If you make it with cream, that will also add to the drink’s not-exactly-diet-friendly calorie count.
