The Hand Grenade cocktail is anything but subtle—this drink delivers exactly what its name promises: an explosive, high-impact experience. Its bright green color may look playful, yet beneath its tropical sweetness lies a serious amount of alcohol. Because of its strength and the sweet, fruity character of the melon liqueur, this is not a cocktail to take lightly. It’s best suited to experienced drinkers, and ideally not on an empty stomach. Blending four—some say even five—different spirits, the Hand Grenade hits fast and hard, making it a guaranteed assault on the senses. Above all, it’s a cocktail for those who embrace a loud, unapologetically wild party atmosphere.
Story
The Hand Grenade cocktail was born in New Orleans, on Bourbon Street in the heart of the famous French Quarter, and the original version is still sold exclusively there. Pam Fortner and Earl Bernhardt opened the Tropical Isle bar in 1984 for the Louisiana World’s Fair, and with it came the now-iconic, melon-forward Hand Grenade cocktail. Although the exact recipe remains a closely guarded trade secret. The base ingredients are widely known: vodka, gin, rum, and melon liqueur. Many people also believe there is a fifth ingredient in the mix. In addition, the cocktail’s name and its signature presentation—often served in a hand grenade-shaped cup—have helped cement its cult status.
Ingredients (as known to the general public)
Since both the ingredients and the exact proportions remain secret, this recipe uses the most commonly accepted version!
⅔ oz (20 ml) vodka
⅔ oz (20 ml) gin
⅔ oz (20 ml) white rum
⅔ oz (20 ml) melon liqueur (e.g., Midori)
1–1 ⅓ oz (30–40 ml) pineapple juice or other tropical fruit juice (to taste)
How to Make a Hand Grenade Cocktail
Pour all the ingredients into a shaker filled generously with ice, then shake well until the drink is thoroughly chilled and the flavors are well combined. Next, strain into a glass filled with crushed ice. For an authentic New Orleans feel, serve it in a hand grenade-shaped glass if you can find one. Otherwise, a green glass is much easier to come by and looks just as fitting.
Serving and Garnish
The Hand Grenade cocktail is traditionally served in its signature hand grenade-shaped plastic cup, although any tall glass works well. For garnish, add a lime wedge if you like. Even so, this cocktail is striking enough to make an impression on its own.
Calorie Content
A single serving of the Hand Grenade cocktail contains approximately 260–270 calories, depending mainly on the liqueur and the type and amount of fruit juice used.
