Three Dots and a Dash cocktail

Three Dots and a Dash Cocktail

Three Dots and a Dash is an exotic cocktail that might not be as iconic as the Mai Tai or as powerful as the Zombie, yet it still earns a well-deserved spot among classic tiki drinks. Built on three different types of rum, it gains its unmistakable character from fresh fruit and a range of spice-driven liqueurs. Among these, cloves, vanilla, and allspice stand out the most. Because of this, it’s certainly not a mild or forgettable drink.

Story

Three Dots and a Dash was created in the 1940s by Donn Beach, the father of tiki cocktails. He designed it to celebrate the end of World War II, symbolizing victory and new beginnings. Its name represents the letter “V” in Morse code—three dots and a dash—and the cocktail itself captures the joy of life returning after the war. The exotic ingredients reflect the era’s longing for adventure and the desire to explore new worlds. It remains a perfect choice for anyone who loves bold, tropical flavors.

Ingredients

1 ½ oz (45 ml) aged rum (preferably from Martinique, Jamaica, or Barbados)

½ oz (15 ml) blended aged rum

¼ oz (7–8 ml) Falernum liqueur

½ oz (15 ml) honey syrup

¼ oz (7–8 ml) Pimento Dram (allspice liqueur)

½ oz (15 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice

½ oz (15 ml) orange juice

1–2 drops Angostura bitters

How to Make a Three Dots and a Dash Cocktail

Place all the ingredients in a blender. Add ice, then blend using the flash-blend technique. In practice, this means blending for only 2–5 seconds—just enough to combine the ingredients and slightly crush the ice. This short blending time prevents the ice from fully melting and keeps the drink from becoming overly frothy. After that, strain the mixture into a tiki glass, ensuring that no large ice fragments slip through.

Serving and Garnish

A Three Dots and a Dash cocktail should always be garnished in a striking way. Traditionally, you top it with three high-quality cocktail cherries and a pineapple leaf, symbolizing the Morse code itself: three dots and a dash. To enhance its tropical character even further, colorful straws are often added as well.

Calorie Content
